The course is delivered over 5 days and will involve 30 contact hours. With assignments and some background reading the course will comprise around 60 hours in all


This course is open to anyone who has an interest in developing their knowledge about substances and substance misuse. Applicants require no previous counselling training or experience.


Nicola Rodgers is a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor and BACP Senior Accredited Supervisor of Individuals. Nicola works as a counsellor and supervisor in a wide variety of settings with both groups and individuals. Nicoal also has a broad range of experience within the substance misuse field, having worked for two non-profit organisations and within a private rehabilitation centre during the last 12 years

John Wheeler has been involved in initiating and delivering a range of Personal Development training courses both in the Education and NGO sectors for the past 30 years. In addition to his counselling and supervision practice John has worked as counsellor and supervisor with several Surrey based organisations. John is a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor and BACP Senior Accredited Individual & Group Supervisor, holds a variety of Counselling Qualifications, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and a BSc (Hons) in Substance Misuse Studies.


By taking this award you will:  

  • learn about the effects of different drugs
  • understand the harm caused by substance misuse
  • recognise the main signs and symptoms of using specific drugs - including alcohol
  • identify the links between HIV / AIDS, hepatitis and substance misuse
  • know how drugs affect pregnancy
  • recognise the signs and symptoms of an overdose of drugs or alcohol
  • identify the assumptions and stereotypes associated with substance misuse

This qualification is knowledge-based and signposted to the Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)

The award is regulated into the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) by the Office of the Qualifications and Examination Regulator (Ofqual)

Some of the information you supply to Surrey Counselling Training will be used by:

  • CPCAB (the awarding organisation associated with your course) in carrying out its functions when verifying your Unique Learner Number and uploading your achievement data (if any) to your Personal Learning Record.
  • The Learning Records Service to fulfil its statutory functions, issue/verify your Unique Learner Number (ULN) and update/check your Personal Learning Record.  The Learning Records Service may share your ULN and Personal Learning Record with other education related organisations, such as your careers service, school, college, university, Government Departments and public bodies responsible for funding your education.
