The Course will consider the philosophical and contextual background to the Solution Focused approach, explore its application and provide opportunities to practise and apply the ideas and skills.

The approach can be applied in many settings and will be especially relevant for anyone working in education, social work, commerce, healthcare, counselling, substance misuse, harm reduction, criminal justice system, family work and industry. The ideas can be applied in any situation where change will help.

Solution focused ideas are ways of working which focus upon: -

  1. Supporting people to consider their preferred futures.
  2. Identifying when, where, how and with whom pieces of the preferred future are already happening.
  3. Recognising opportunities to implement more of the preferred future.

The approach does not focus on the past, it focuses on the present and the future.

The Practitioner's role is to encourage the "Client" to recognise the steps he is already taking towards change.

Often these steps have been overlooked and the Practitioner's role is to help the Client to identify existing skills, strengths and exceptions to "the problem" which he can use to implement the change he is seeking.

Solution Focused Brief Practice is based on simple concepts though implementing the ideas effectively calls for considerable skill.

On the Course you will develop: -

  • An understanding of the difference between a problem focused and a solution focused approach to helping others.
  • An understanding of the major ideas and practitioners that have influenced the development of brief practice in general and solution focused practice in particular.
  • An increased confidence in their ability to co-construct solutions with clients.
  • The personal and professional skills to build and maintain an effective and solution focused relationship with a range of clients.
  • An understanding of how solution focused practice is adapted to a range of issues and problems
  • A knowledge of the literature pertaining to specific applications of solution focused practice
  • An understanding of the interactional nature of both problems and solutions.
  • The ability to structure helping conversations in a purposeful way.
  • An increased awareness of those factors which facilitate and those factors which hinder solution focused practice.

Assessment will be structured as follows:

General Criteria

2. Development of Skills

3. Demonstrate an ability to structure and apply solution focused helping interventions within the context of practical skills settings
